About this opportunity

Opportunity Overview

Headquartered in Washington, D.C., the World Bank Group operates as one of the most influential international financial institutions, with 189 member countries and a mandate to end extreme poverty and promote shared prosperity. The Treasury and Sustainable Development Internship Program offers graduate students a direct line into the operational core of an organization that mobilizes billions of dollars annually for development projects across the globe. Interns are placed within the Treasury unit—which manages the institution's capital markets operations, investments, and financial risk—or within the Sustainable Development practice, which designs and implements projects addressing climate resilience, infrastructure, agriculture, and human capital. The World Bank Group's dual focus on financial engineering and on-the-ground development makes this internship distinct from typical policy roles. Treasury operations involve managing a portfolio of assets, issuing bonds in international capital markets, and structuring financial instruments that fund development initiatives. The Sustainable Development arm works with governments to design projects that balance economic growth with environmental and social safeguards. Interns gain exposure to both the financial mechanics and the policy frameworks that drive global development, a combination rarely found in a single placement. Washington, D.C. provides a demanding but rewarding environment. The city is the epicenter of global policy, hosting the headquarters of the International Monetary Fund, the U.S. Federal Government, and hundreds of think tanks and NGOs. Interns navigate a professional culture that prizes precision, analytical rigor, and cross-cultural collaboration. The cost of living is high—housing and transportation consume a significant portion of any stipend—but the city's density of museums, research institutions, and international events offers unmatched networking and learning opportunities. The World Bank Group's commitment to diversity means interns work alongside colleagues from over 150 countries, creating a microcosm of the institution's global reach. Strategically, this internship serves as a gateway to a career in international development finance. Alumni of the program have moved into roles at multilateral development banks, central banks, and major consulting firms. The combination of hands-on financial modeling, policy research, and exposure to high-level negotiations with government officials provides a foundation that is difficult to replicate elsewhere. For those serious about a career in global development, this is a direct entry point into the institution that shapes the agenda.

Key Responsibilities

  • Construct and maintain financial models that project cash flows, assess risk, and evaluate the viability of sustainable development projects across sectors such as renewable energy, water infrastructure, and agricultural resilience.
  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative research on economic trends, poverty dynamics, and inequality metrics, synthesizing findings into memos and presentations for senior staff.
  • Draft policy briefs and technical reports that inform the design of country-level development strategies and lending operations.
  • Support the structuring of green bonds and other innovative financial instruments that channel private capital toward climate adaptation and mitigation projects.
  • Analyze large datasets using statistical software (Stata, R, or Python) to identify patterns in development outcomes and flag emerging risks.
  • Prepare knowledge products, including blog posts, case studies, and internal white papers, that communicate project results and lessons learned to internal and external audiences.
  • Participate in meetings with government delegations, multilateral partners, and private sector stakeholders, taking notes and preparing follow-up action items.
  • Assist in the due diligence process for new lending operations, reviewing environmental and social safeguards and ensuring compliance with institutional policies.
  • Contribute to the preparation of board documents and briefing materials for senior management ahead of high-stakes negotiations.
  • Support the organization of workshops, conferences, and knowledge-sharing events that bring together development practitioners from multiple sectors.

Benefits & Compensation Package

  • An hourly stipend that provides a baseline for living expenses in Washington, D.C., paid biweekly throughout the internship duration.
  • A travel allowance for interns relocating from outside the United States, covering round-trip airfare to Washington, D.C. and a modest relocation stipend.
  • Access to the World Bank Group's internal training platform, offering courses on project management, financial analysis, and leadership development.
  • A dedicated supervisor and mentor within the assigned department, providing structured feedback and career guidance throughout the placement.
  • Networking opportunities through internal events, brown-bag lunches, and cross-departmental meetings with senior leadership and fellow interns.
  • Use of the World Bank Group's library and research databases, including specialized financial data terminals and development economics journals.
  • A formal certificate of completion and a performance evaluation upon conclusion of the internship, valuable for future academic or professional applications.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in quantitative analysis, including experience with statistical software such as Stata, R, or SPSS, and advanced Excel modeling skills.
  • Fluency in English is mandatory; working proficiency in French, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, Portuguese, or Chinese is a significant advantage given the Bank's global operations.
  • Prior internship or work experience in a development organization, financial institution, government agency, or research institute is preferred but not required.
