## Why NGO Salaries Are Hard to Find Transparency about compensation varies significantly across the sector. Private companies like Glassdoor help but have incomplete NGO data. The UN is unique in that its salary scales are fully public. ## UN Salary Scales (Professional Staff, 2024/2025) UN professional salaries are set by the International Civil Service Commission (ICSC) and adjusted for duty station. Base salaries: | Grade | Net Base Salary (USD/year) | |-------|--------------------------| | P1 | ~$55,000–65,000 | | P2 | ~$65,000–80,000 | | P3 | ~$80,000–100,000 | | P4 | ~$100,000–120,000 | | P5 | ~$115,000–140,000 | **Important:** Net means after staff assessment (UN tax equivalent). UN staff receive additional post adjustment (PA) on top of base salary, which varies by duty station. In New York, the PA adds roughly 60–70% of net base. In Nairobi, around 50%. This makes the effective compensation significantly higher than the base figures above. UN staff also receive health insurance (SHIF), pension (UNJSPF), education grants for dependents, and home leave travel. ## INGO Salaries (Approximate Ranges) These are approximate and vary significantly by organization, location, and funding source: | Level | Annual Salary Range (USD, HQ position) | |-------|----------------------------------------| | Entry/Junior (0–3 years) | $35,000–55,000 | | Mid-level (3–7 years) | $55,000–80,000 | | Senior (7–12 years) | $80,000–110,000 | | Director level | $100,000–150,000+ | Field positions often include housing, hardship, and R&R allowances that significantly increase effective compensation. ## Consultancy Day Rates UN consultancy rates are standardized: - Junior consultant: $200–350/day - Mid-level: $350–600/day - Senior/specialist: $600–1,200/day INGO consultancy rates are lower on average: $150–500/day depending on specialization. ## Negotiating in the NGO Sector Salaries in the UN system are non-negotiable — they're set by grade and duty station. At NGOs, there is more room to negotiate, particularly at senior levels. For entry-level roles, negotiation is limited but not zero.
