Biometric Passport & Visa Photo Standards Guide
Navigating global university applications, student visas, and official government permits requires submitting compliant biometric portrait photos. Rejections during visa processing frequently occur due to incorrect head ratios, shadowy backgrounds, or non-standard dimensions.
Official Biometric Requirements by Region
- United States (DS-160 & F-1 Visa): 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm), high resolution (600x600 pixels minimum), white background, zero eyeglasses, chin-to-crown ratio of 50% to 69%.
- Schengen Area (Europe): 35 x 45 mm, light gray or off-white background, neutral facial expression, eyes open and clearly visible.
- China (CSC & X1/X2 Visa): 33 x 48 mm, plain white background, dark clothing contrast, no jewelry or head coverings (unless religious).
- United Kingdom (CAS & Student Visa): 35 x 45 mm, cream or light gray background, clear focus without shadow cast behind ears.
Best Practices for Home Photography
To capture an acceptable photo using your smartphone before uploading to the studio:
- Stand 4 feet away from a brightly lit, plain wall to minimize shadows behind your shoulders.
- Position the camera at eye level rather than angling upward or downward.
- Avoid flash photography if it creates hot spots or red-eye reflections.
