The Institute of Geological Sciences, Polish Academy of Sciences, in Warsaw is seeking a Post-doc researcher for a project focused on understanding the patterns of variability of stable isotopes in terrestrial temperate ecosystems. The successful candidate will be part of a research team investigating the isotopic variability of amino acids in modern and fossil plant and animal tissues. The project aims to better interpret the isotope flux in fossil assemblages, with a focus on bone collagen. The research will be conducted at the IGS PAS Research Centre in Warsaw, with some foreign trips required for training and conferences. The Post-doc position is available for a highly motivated and experienced researcher with a doctoral degree in Earth science, environmental science, chemistry, biology, or related disciplines. The ideal candidate will have experience in biochemical and geochemical analyses, laboratory work with chemical compounds, and stable isotope analysis. The researcher will be responsible for conducting scientific research, laboratory work, data analysis, and preparation of articles for scientific journals. The research project will involve laboratory analyses, including EA-IRMS, GC-FID/MS, and GC-C-IRMS of stable carbon and nitrogen isotope composition. The researcher will also be responsible for refining the GC-C-IRMS method, including measurement techniques and derivatisation methods. The project's ultimate goal is to use the patterns of modern isotopic variability to better interpret the isotope flux in fossil assemblages.
Responsibilities
- Conducting scientific research on isotopic variability of amino acids in modern and fossil plant and animal tissues
- Laboratory work: documentation, selection, and preparation of samples
- Extraction of analytical fractions, such as collagen and amino acids
- Derivatisation of amino acids for GC analysis
- Laboratory analyses: EA-IRMS, GC-FID/MS, and GC-C-IRMS of stable carbon and nitrogen isotope composition
- Refining the GC-C-IRMS method, including measurement techniques and derivatisation methods
- Analysis and interpretation of all collected data
- Preparation and submission of articles to scientific journals
- Presenting research results at international conferences

Requirements & Qualifications
- A doctoral degree in Earth science, environmental science, chemistry, biology, or related disciplines
- PhD degree must be conferred in the year of employment or within 12 years before 1 January of the year of employment
- Experience in biochemical and geochemical analyses, documented by publications
- Experience in laboratory work with chemical compounds, such as GC, LC, mass spectrometry, IRMS, or similar methods
- Experience in stable isotope analysis is an additional advantage
- Experience in operating and servicing/building measurement equipment is an additional advantage
- Availability for full-time work
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to multitask
- Independence, analytical thinking, and a professional approach to duties
- Experience in writing scientific texts in English, documented by publications
- Very good knowledge of spoken and written English
