The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is hiring an Assistant Protection Officer to work in Stockholm, Sweden. This role is a key function within the Nordic team of UNHCR's Representation for the Nordic and Baltic countries, focusing on UNHCR's activities in Sweden. The Assistant Protection Officer will be the main focal point for all protection work regarding Sweden and will report directly to the Deputy Representative. The position requires legal qualifications and experience in the legal field, as well as a wide interest in matters related to forcibly displaced and stateless people. The Assistant Protection Officer will undertake a broad range of activities, including legal analysis, drafting legal commentaries, and preparing court interventions. They will also be responsible for community-based protection-related work, organizing meetings with civil society organizations, and representing UNHCR in meetings organized by stakeholders. The incumbent will ensure that reception and detention centers across the country are visited and will hold focus-group discussions with asylum-seekers, refugees, and stateless persons. The position is designed to be primarily office-based, but the incumbent will be required to travel within Sweden to locations where asylum-seekers, refugees, and stateless persons are based. This may include remote locations, and flexibility to undertake in-country travel is required. The office hours are from 09:00 to 17:30, and UNHCR supports flexible working arrangements in accordance with its policy.

Responsibilities

Support the identification and management of risks and seek to seize opportunities impacting objectives in the area of responsibility
Perform legal analysis, such as drafting legal commentaries to law proposals
Prepare court interventions and/or engage with legal representatives on individual cases
Carry out community-based protection-related work
Organize meetings with civil society organizations
Represent UNHCR in meetings organized by stakeholders
Ensure that reception and detention centers across the country are visited
Hold focus-group discussions with asylum-seekers, refugees, and stateless persons
Liaise with refugee-led organizations and ensure the office can support and strengthen refugee voices in advocating for their rights in Sweden
Participate in public speaking, debates, conferences, roundtables, and other public events
Deliver regular training for partners, counterparts, and other stakeholders

1 year of relevant experience with an undergraduate degree, or no experience with a graduate degree, or no experience with a doctorate degree
