Opportunity Overview

The World Health Organization is hiring a local Special Services Agreement personnel to support the development of a climate-informed health early warning and response system in Vanuatu. The role will be based in Vanuatu and will work closely with the Ministry of Health, Vanuatu Meteorological and Hydro-Meteorological Services, and other stakeholders. The successful candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in public health, environmental science, meteorology, or a related field, and at least 2 years of experience in public health information systems or climate information systems. The climate-informed health early warning and response system is part of the GEF LDCF project "Building resilience of health systems in Pacific Island LDCs to Climate Change". The project aims to increase the capacity of national and sub-national health systems and institutions to manage long-term climate-sensitive health risks in Vanuatu. The system will provide timely detection and response to climate-sensitive diseases, taking into account climate and weather patterns. The role will involve supporting the design and development of the climate-informed health early warning and response system, including leading the implementation of project outcome 2-related activities in the country. The successful candidate will have strong coordination and facilitation skills, ability to compile and analyze health or climate data, and experience in training and capacity building.

Responsibilities

Support the design and development of climate-informed health early warning and response systems
Lead the implementation of project outcome 2-related activities in the country
Collect and compile information on Vanuatu's existing health surveillance and/or meteorological data systems
Map existing Health Information System and evaluate reporting and response channels for climate-sensitive diseases
Support the establishment of the national list of climate-sensitive diseases in Vanuatu
Facilitate meetings with the Ministry of Health, Vanuatu Meteorological and Hydro-Meteorological Services, and other stakeholders
Provide contextual insights on priority climate-sensitive diseases in Vanuatu
Support customization and adaptation of CI-EWARS architecture and infrastructure to Vanuatu's needs
Facilitate procurement and installation of ICT equipment for hosting climate and disease data for the early warning system
Assist in organizing workshops, training sessions, and stakeholder consultations
Support the development of training materials and adapt them into Bislama if required
Provide support to organize training for integrated communicable disease management of climate-sensitive diseases

Benefits

Salary: VT 1,620,111 to VT 1,917,000 per year
Duration of contract: 12 months initially, with potential extension

Requirements & Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in public health, environmental science, meteorology, or related field
At least 2 years of experience in public health information systems or climate information systems
Experience working with government ministries, health facilities, or meteorological agencies
Demonstrated experience in disease surveillance and/or epidemiology would be an asset
Strong coordination and facilitation skills
Ability to compile and analyze health or climate data
Experience in training and capacity building
Good communication and report writing skills
Fluency in English and Bislama language
