Senior Auditor - Digital Payments

Opportunity Overview The Senior Auditor for Digital Payments role is based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and focuses on auditing digital payment systems, including mobile money, card payments, and online banking platforms. The position sits within a financial services or banking environment, where the auditor will examine the security, compliance, and operational efficiency of digital payment channels. This is a hands-on role that involves reviewing transaction data, testing internal controls, and identifying risks tied to fraud, data breaches, or regulatory non-compliance. The auditor will work closely with IT teams, finance departments, and external regulators. Day-to-day work involves planning audit engagements, executing test procedures on payment systems, and writing clear reports that management can act on. The role requires someone comfortable with both financial auditing principles and the technical side of payment technologies, such as encryption, tokenization, and payment gateways. Experience with Ethiopian banking regulations, including directives from the National Bank of Ethiopia, would be a strong advantage. Ethiopia's financial sector is growing quickly, with mobile money services like Telebirr and CBE Birr expanding across the country. The government has pushed for greater financial inclusion, which means digital payment systems are under increased regulatory scrutiny. Living in Addis Ababa offers a mix of modern office environments and a city that serves as the diplomatic hub of Africa, hosting the African Union headquarters. The cost of living is moderate compared to Western capitals, though expatriates should budget for housing and international school fees if relocating with family. The work culture in Ethiopian banks tends to be formal, with a strong emphasis on hierarchy and written communication. This role is suited for an experienced auditor with at least five years in financial services, ideally with some exposure to digital banking or fintech. It is not an entry-level position. The employer expects candidates to hit the ground running, managing audits independently and communicating findings to senior leadership. Responsibilities - Plan and execute audits of digital payment systems, including mobile money, card processing, and online banking platforms - Assess the design and effectiveness of internal controls over payment transactions - Test transaction data for accuracy, completeness, and authorization - Identify risks related to fraud, cybersecurity, and regulatory compliance - Review compliance with National Bank of Ethiopia directives and international payment standards - Evaluate the security of payment gateways, encryption protocols, and data storage practices - Document audit findings and prepare detailed reports for management and audit committees - Follow up on audit recommendations to ensure corrective actions are implemented - Coordinate with IT auditors and external consultants on integrated audit engagements - Stay current on emerging digital payment technologies and related regulatory changes Requirements & Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field - Professional certification such as CPA, ACCA, CIA, or CISA is strongly preferred - Minimum of five years of auditing experience, with at least two years in digital payments or fintech - Strong knowledge of payment systems, including mobile money, card networks, and real-time payment rails - Familiarity with Ethiopian banking regulations and the National Bank of Ethiopia's directives - Experience with audit software and data analytics tools, such as ACL or IDEA - Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; Amharic is an advantage - Ability to work independently and manage multiple audit engagements simultaneously - Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail - Willingness to travel to regional branches or client sites as needed Benefits - Competitive salary commensurate with experience - Health insurance coverage for the employee and dependents - Annual leave and public holidays as per Ethiopian labor law - Professional development opportunities, including training on digital payment systems - Pension contribution as required by Ethiopian law How to Apply 1.
