The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is hiring a Senior Field Assistant in Rome or Agrigento. This is a locally recruited position, classified as a General Service role, and does not require higher education. The Senior Field Assistant will be supervised by a Senior Field Officer or Associate and will perform a variety of functions related to field activities within the office. The role involves frequent internal contacts with staff members and external contacts with national and international institutions, leaders of the refugee community, and local population. The Senior Field Assistant will be responsible for assisting in the implementation of UNHCR programs, including monitoring the delivery of assistance items and infrastructure. They will also assist in administrative tasks, such as preparing reports and meeting with authorized personnel during field missions. The role requires acting as an interpreter, collecting data, and responding to routine queries. The ideal candidate will have relevant work experience and skills in areas such as business administration, law, and political science. They will also need to demonstrate proficiency in languages, including English and the local language.
Responsibilities
- Assist in monitoring the implementation of UNHCR programs, including the delivery of assistance items and monitoring of infrastructure
- Assist in administrative tasks, such as preparation of reports and meeting authorized personnel during field missions
- Act as interpreter in the exchange of routine information and contribute to related liaison activities
- Collect data and other information relevant to UNHCR and report to the supervisor accordingly
- Keep regular contacts with local authorities and implementing partners as requested by supervisor
- Assist in the reception, registration, and provision of assistance to persons of concern to UNHCR
- Follow up on the overall situation of persons of concern in camps and other areas where they have been accommodated and report accordingly
- Liaise with local authority counterparts, partners, and populations of concern
- Direct incidents and problems to the supervisor when they cannot be resolved at their level
- Support the identification and management of risks and seek to seize opportunities impacting objectives in the area of responsibility

Requirements & Qualifications
- 2 years of relevant experience with a High School Diploma, or 1 year of relevant work experience with a Bachelor's degree or equivalent or higher
- Completion of UNHCR learning programs or specific training relevant to functions of the position is desirable
- Knowledge of English and the local language is required
- IT-computer literacy, drafting and documentation, and multi-stakeholder communications with partners, government, and community are essential functional skills
