Volunteer Technical Communicator — AI Apps and Conversational Agents
Crossing Party Lines is seeking a Volunteer Technical Communicator for their Apps and Agents team, which is developing AI-powered applications and conversational agents to help people communicate more effectively across differences. The volunteer will help make complex AI-powered tools understandable, engaging, and usable by translating complex ideas into clear language. This role is part of a team that has been helping people with different political views talk openly and understand one another for nearly a decade. The team is now combining the latest generative-AI capabilities with their proprietary intellectual property to create tools for workplaces, families, organizations, and everyday relationships. The volunteer will work on creating a clear and consistent bridge between the subject-matter expertise, developers, and users of the applications. This will involve both technical writing and product communication to help users understand the products without feeling overwhelmed by technical or academic language. The role can be shaped somewhat around the volunteer's strengths, and they will have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, including practice applications, AI coaches, and conversational role-play tools. The ideal candidate will be able to write clearly and accurately, ask questions that reveal missing information, and preserve nuance while making language easier to understand. They will also be comfortable receiving detailed feedback and revising collaboratively, and be able to remain neutral and respectful when writing about contested issues. What You'll Do Write or refine app instructions, onboarding text, prompts, tooltips, help content, and explanatory messages Help maintain consistent terminology and voice across multiple products Write testing instructions, FAQs, setup guides, and internal process documents Help explain the products to potential volunteers, partners, funders, and users Collaborate with designers, developers, testers, and subject-matter experts Identify places where jargon, abstraction, or excessive complexity may prevent understanding Requirements & Qualifications Ability to write clearly, accurately, and with a strong sense of audience Knowledge of how to ask questions that reveal missing information Ability to preserve nuance while making language easier to understand Comfort with receiving detailed feedback and revising collaboratively Interest in AI, communication, education, product development, psychology, conflict transformation, or civic life Ability to write in a warm, natural voice rather than relying on corporate or academic jargon Ability to remain neutral and respectful when writing about contested issues and different political views Experience in technical writing, UX writing, instructional design, product documentation, communications, curriculum development, journalism, editing, or content strategy is helpful Familiarity with software development or generative AI is useful but not required Benefits Experience documenting and communicating innovative generative-AI products Opportunities to create strong writing samples and portfolio material Meaningful influence over products at an early stage of development Collaboration with developers, designers, testers, and communication specialists Exposure to practical frameworks for depolarization and constructive communication The opportunity to help translate years of nonprofit knowledge into tools with broad potential Professional references based on the quality and consistency of your contribution 2.
